Much Needed Alone Time

I love using my time to help others. I help my husband each morning get to the Metro by dropping him off before I head to school. My daughter is working at my school so I head back home and we carpool together. I help by making us both bag lunches. Then I wait until she is ready and we head to school together. I like helping my 3rd grade team by sharing ways to teach writing. And I love helping my students in my classroom all day long!

Yet, sometimes, I like just being alone.
Sometimes, I just NEED alone time.
Yesterday, I got what I needed!

My husband didn't need a ride so I left the house early and enjoyed a Starbucks breakfast (alone) and took 30 minutes to sit (alone) to read and comment on other slicers' blogs. My daughter wasn't working today so I got to school early and had a whole hour (alone) before the kids arrived to think and plan. My daughter agreed to cook dinner so I stayed late at school (alone) to read and respond to my students' blog posts and to grade their reading and math tests.

As I sat in my classroom last night (alone), blaring The Talking Heads and the Soundtrack from Hamilton on spotify, I got organized for the parent/teacher conferences that start at 2pm today and continue all day on Friday.

I like being helpful but I am very grateful that yesterday I had some much needed alone time.

  1. Good morning Sally. You get a lot done in your alone time! Your post really captures the tension between satisfaction of being useful to others and useful to yourself and your own agenda. I would like to hear a little more about your alone time that is not work-related :) What do you do just for you?

  3. Sounds like you are an introvert like me. I cannot function well when I don't get alone time. This year I have a schedule in which I get a solid hour for lunch. Alone time in the middle of the work day is a gift. I can recharge my batteries.

  5. Sally,

    Love these two parts:
"Yet, sometimes, I like just being alone.
Sometimes, I just NEED alone time.
Yesterday, I got what I needed!" and
"I like being helpful but I am very grateful that yesterday I had some much needed alone time."
    :-)

  6. I do enjoy my alone time too. It must be something special to have your daughter working at your school. You wrote a great summary of your busy time alone. Good luck with conferences!

  11. I love this post! I know exactly how you feel! Most of the time, I get my energy from being around others, but there are moments when all I want is time to myself. So glad you got that time.

  12. YES! So true! I feel like sometimes I feel guilty for wanting to be alone, but it is so necessary! I also am new to slicing and I am excited to find alone time just to comment on even more.
